Aaron Judge took four pitches in his first at bat on May 4. He did not swing once.
Two innings later he launched a home run.
This is not coincidence. This is a hitter who knows when to get quiet.
Judge started 2026 hitting .230 with nine homers through April 25. The numbers looked fine. But Judge felt the drift in his swing. He told reporters he needed to simplify. No hero swings. No pressing. Just see the ball and hit the ball.
The power of subtraction
Judge practices attentional narrowing under pressure. When his mind starts racing, he removes variables instead of adding them. He stops thinking about launch angle. He stops checking the scoreboard. He watches the pitcher’s release point and lets his body react.
This is harder than it sounds. The brain wants to fix things when numbers dip. Judge resists that urge.
Since April 25, he has slashed .366/.469/.878 with six homers and 12 RBIs over 11 games. He reached 15 homers in 37 games — faster than any season of his career. His Baseball Savant page shows red across the board: 100th percentile in expected slugging, 100th percentile in barrel rate, 99th percentile in xwOBA.
The discipline behind the power
Aaron Judge hot streak numbers reveal a hitter who stopped forcing outcomes. In his first 22 games, he chased pitches outside the zone 24 percent of the time. Over his last 11 games, that dropped to 18 percent.
He also leads the majors with six first inning home runs this season and has 91 career first inning homers as a Yankee, trailing only Babe Ruth (126) and Mickey Mantle (103). Those early swings come from preparation, not panic.
Judge holds the AL record with 62 homers in 2022. But he does not chase that ghost. He lets the ball find the barrel.
What you can take away
When you feel off, subtract before you add. Do not change your stance. Do not buy new equipment. Do not watch ten hours of video. Pick one thing — tracking the ball longer, keeping your front shoulder closed — and trust it.
Simplification is not weakness. It is how Aaron Judge hits 15 homers before May.
My batting average in slow pitch softball says I have not mastered this yet.
