Gunnar Henderson digs in with a full count. He knows the numbers. He cannot escape them.
With two strikes this season, Henderson is hitting .076. That is not a typo.
The 24 year old Orioles shortstop has nine home runs and 19 RBI through 37 games. Those counting stats look solid. But his .206 average and 31.2 percent strikeout rate reveal a hitter stuck in his own head.

The tipping point of pressure
Henderson is experiencing what sport psychologists call paralysis by analysis. He knows he cannot afford a third strike. That pressure changes his swing. He becomes defensive. He protects instead of attacking.
The numbers prove the split. With less than two strikes, Henderson hits .387 with an .839 slugging percentage. With two strikes, those numbers fall to .076 and .152.
This is not a talent issue. This is a mind issue.
Where the slump lives
Gunnar Henderson two strike numbers tell a story of a player pressing instead of trusting. His last seven games show a .200 average with 10 strikeouts in 25 at bats. He is chasing pitches he normally spits on. He is swinging at breaking balls in the dirt.
The good news is that the power remains. His nine homers and .460 slugging percentage show the bat still works when he connects. But Henderson needs to find his calm before the count reaches two strikes.
Scouts have noted his “great bat to ball skills” but those skills “haven’t shown up yet in 2026”. They will. He has hit .265 with 95 home runs and 279 RBI over his career. This is a slump. Not a sentence.
How to break the cycle
When you feel the pressure rising, narrow your focus. Pick one spot on the pitcher’s release point. Do not think about the count. Do not think about the consequences. Track the ball from that spot to the zone.
Drills help. Ask a friend to throw you batting practice with two strike calls every pitch. Train your brain to treat two strikes the same as zero strikes.
I have struck out looking on three straight pitches in slow pitch softball. I know this pain. Henderson will escape it.
