His scoreless streak ballooned to 29 2/3 innings, and his ERA dropped to 1.82. Sánchez now owns the fifth complete game and third shutout in the majors this season. For a team that lost ten consecutive games from April 15 to April 24, watching the left-hander retire the first 11 Pirates he faced felt like turning a page on two miserable months.
Bench coach Dusty Wathan stepped in as acting manager while Don Mattingly attended his son’s college graduation. Wathan became the third person to manage the Phillies in 2026 and picked up a win in his debut. Philadelphia improved to 14-4 since Mattingly replaced Rob Thomson on April 28. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber Provide the Firepower
Bryce Harper wasted no time putting the game out of reach. After Trea Turner led off with a single and Kyle Schwarber drew a walk, Harper hammered a 457-foot three-run homer off the batter’s eye in center field. It was his 11th home run of the season. The ball left the bat at a scorching exit velocity that Statcast would peg among the hardest-hit shots of the day. Three batters in, the Phillies led 3-0, and the rout was on.
Turner and Alec Bohm collected two hits apiece. Schwarber, baseball’s leading home run hitter, added an RBI single. By the end of the second inning, the Phillies had built a 5-0 cushion against Pirates starter Bubba Chandler. Chandler struggled through three innings, issuing four walks and pushing his major league-leading walk total to 31.
The offensive outburst followed a wild 11-9 comeback win in extra innings the previous night. On Friday, Schwarber launched two home runs to reach 20 on the season, reaching that milestone on the earliest date in MLB history. Harper delivered a game-tying two-run single in the ninth after closer Gregory Soto walked Schwarber with the bases loaded.
A Turnaround Defined by Run Prevention and Timely Hitting
Under Thomson, the Phillies ranked 28th in runs scored per game and 28th in team ERA. The club sat at 9-19 with a minus-47 run differential and playoff odds that had cratered to 14.1 percent. Since Mattingly took over, the rotation has posted a 3.23 ERA in May. The lineup has woken up. The defense has tightened.
The Pirates series win was the fifth in six attempts for Philadelphia. The club clinched the three-game set at PNC Park and improved to 15-5 over its last 20 games after snapping that 10-game skid.
