Then the second half happened.
Philadelphia has dropped eight of ten games since returning from the break. Their second-half record sits at 3-6. In five of those six defeats, the offense managed one run or fewer. The Phillies have lost three straight series to the Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees. A 1-0 loss to the Yankees on July 24 dropped them to 2-5 post-break, but they snapped a four-game losing streak with an 11-4 win on July 26.
The offensive numbers tell a brutal story. Philadelphia posted a .278 on-base percentage in those first seven games back. The team batting average sits at .236 for the season, ranking 23rd in MLB. They’ve scored 449 runs while allowing 467, a run differential of -10. The Phillies are 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the first two games of the Yankees series alone.
The Phillies have squandered elite pitching performances during this stretch. Zack Wheeler and Jesús Luzardo have delivered quality starts only to watch the offense disappear. Luzardo took a tough-luck 1-0 loss on July 24 despite matching zeros with Yankees starter Cam Schlittler for three innings.
Phillies wild card position slipping to Cubs
The Chicago Cubs have surged ahead in the National League wild card race. Chicago sits at 59-46, holding the top wild card spot with a 2.5-game lead over the Phillies. Philadelphia holds the second wild card position at 57-49, but their lead over the chasing pack has shrunk to 2.0 games over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Cubs own a critical tiebreaker over Philadelphia. Chicago has won three series in a row while the Phillies have lost four straight. The Cubs have outplayed Philadelphia across the board, with a +52 run differential compared to the Phillies’ -10 mark.
Braves extend division lead over Phillies
The Atlanta Braves have widened their NL East advantage during Philadelphia’s collapse. Atlanta now leads the division at 61-43, 5.5 games ahead of the Phillies. The Braves have won eight of their last 11 games and stabilized their position atop the NL East.
Philadelphia entered the break trailing Atlanta by two games. That gap has ballooned to 5.5 games during the skid. The Phillies have lost three games in the standings to the Braves since the break. Atlanta’s run differential of +106 dwarfs Philadelphia’s -10 mark.
The underlying metrics expose deeper problems. Philadelphia ranks 23rd in batting average and 26th in on-base percentage. Their .399 slugging percentage ranks 16th. The Phillies have struck out 851 times, third-most in baseball.
Manager Don Mattingly acknowledged the offensive struggles after Saturday’s loss. “We are in a spot where we haven’t scored and we haven’t swung the bats great,” Mattingly said. “But we gotta continue to work and keep fighting through it.”
Time is running out for the Phillies to right the ship. The trade deadline approaches, and Philadelphia’s weaknesses—on-base percentage, fifth starter production, and run creation—have been exposed for everyone to see. The Phillies wild card cushion has evaporated, and the division is slipping further out of reach.
