The 2026 MLB All-Star Game is coming to Philadelphia, yet the home crowd won’t see one of the National League’s best pitchers on the mound. Zack Wheeler is not an All-Star. The Philadelphia Phillies ace has a 2.28 ERA across 14 starts with a 9-1 record. He ranks among the NL leaders in nearly every pitching category. None of that mattered when rosters were announced.
The Zack Wheeler All-Star snub stems from a rule that penalizes pitchers for doing their jobs. Wheeler is scheduled to start Sunday in Detroit, making him ineligible to pitch two days later in the Midsummer Classic. Because he cannot appear in the game, MLB will not name him to the roster. Not even as a replacement. Teammate Jesús Luzardo got added as a replacement Tuesday. Wheeler did not.
The Numbers Behind the Zack Wheeler All-Star Snub
Wheeler’s 2026 campaign reads like a Cy Young resume. He owns a 0.91 WHIP with 98 strikeouts against 20 walks across 87 innings. His ERA sits at 2.28. He returned from thoracic outlet decompression surgery last September and picked up where he left off. The 36-year-old right-hander has been dominant.
Tuesday night in Cincinnati, Wheeler delivered a message. He tied his career high with 14 strikeouts over seven innings, allowing four hits and one run in a 4-1 Phillies victory. He became the sixth pitcher in franchise history with 14 or more strikeouts and no walks in a single game. J.T. Realmuto called it “about as good as I’ve seen him”.
“I feel like that was a reminder for whoever needs to be reminded,” Wheeler said after the game. “It pisses me off. It’s kind of BS”.
Why the Rule Makes No Sense
The rule exists to protect players from pitching too frequently. Wheeler understands that. What he doesn’t accept is being excluded from the roster entirely. He told reporters he would pitch an inning in the All-Star Game even after starting Sunday. He typically throws a bullpen session on the second or third day after a start anyway.
“Because I pitch on a certain day, I can’t pitch an All-Star game, or even be there, or get the recognition for it,” Wheeler said.
Cristopher Sánchez suffered the same fate last season. He missed the All-Star Game because he pitched the Sunday before it. Now Wheeler joins that unfortunate club. The Phillies have six All-Stars this year including Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Sánchez, Jhoan Duran, Brandon Marsh, and Luzardo. Wheeler should make seven.
Interim manager Don Mattingly admitted he was surprised Wheeler didn’t make it. “Wheels does not get the attention nationally,” Mattingly said.
The Zack Wheeler All-Star snub exposes a broken system. A pitcher with Wheeler’s resume deserves the recognition regardless of schedule. The All-Star Game is in Philadelphia this year. The home fans wanted to see their ace. Instead, they’ll watch Wheeler pitch Sunday in Detroit and wonder what might have been.
